2015 Scholar Update: Marianna Beaute

Sophomore year was a year of making a lot of big decisions and reflecting. I had become

the treasurer of the Barnard Organization of Soul Sisters and started working as a babysitter for

the Barnard Babysitting Agency, meanwhile being an active member of other clubs and

organizations on campus. I enjoyed my involvements outside of my academics and they served

as an escape, but were also very therapeutic.

When I entered college I knew exactly what I wanted to do and why I wanted to do it. I

was doing terribly in Mathematics and although I still wanted to teach mathematics, I no longer

had a desire to continue taking these classes that I had and would fail terribly.  I met with my

adviser and we had a long conversation on the purpose of college, and life after college. One

thing that I learned from our discussion is that college is a time where you should be taking

classes that you enjoy and are truly interested in. It reminded me of conversations with friends

about courses that they truly enjoyed and often times I yearned for that feeling. Although there

were a couple of classes that I had enjoyed, I took the courses for other purposes. Many do not

get the opportunity to attend college, let alone to take classes in subject matter that interests them

outside of the classroom. Eventually with the guidance of my adviser I changed my major to

Urban Studies and kept my Education concentration. I knew that whatever I do, I must work with

children, I must teach and I must open up my own school.

This past summer, I took two courses to prepare myself and to knock out some of the

requirements for my major so that I wouldn’t be too far behind. I took a course on the history of

New York City and the other on anthropological perspectives of the city; I enjoyed them both.

After the completion of these courses, I immediately began interning with the East Harlem

Tutorial Program. The East Harlem Tutorial Program is a comprehensive program that serves to

motivate and prepare students for college and encourages young people to engage in community

service. The program focuses its attention on the minorities of the East Harlem community. The

mission of this program aligned with my own which was why I chose this site to use for my Con

Edison Internship Grant for which I applied at Barnard and was accepted.  I worked with third

graders for four weeks of the internship and completed office work for the other 3 weeks. I

worked on math, science and English with the students, serving as a second pair of eyes and

hands in the classroom. Oh, can I get used to being called Ms. Marianna! That experience was

phenomenal and one that I will continuously reflect on as I begin to think about that I would like

my own school to look like.

I remember stressing a lot last year because I was afraid of not knowing how I was going

to accomplish the goals I had set for myself had I not followed the plan that I set in stone.

Towards the end of my sophomore year after having my worst semester thus far, I learned to

enjoy the process of whatever it is, whether it’s writing a paper or accomplishing a goal, and not

to place so much value on the end point.  As an officially declared education minor, I am so

excited to finally be taking courses that I enjoy. For the fall of my junior year I am taking a

Junior Colloquium Course on Shaping the Modern City, GIS and Case Studies, as well as

Psychology of Education and Contemporary Issues in Education. In addition, I will also serve as

the Vice President of the Barnard Organization of Soul Sisters for the 2015-2016 academic year.

I look forward to having my best semester yet.

2015 Scholar Update: Alexander Martin

I find myself even more surprised to see where I’m at now as compared to last

year. I’m leaving this country for the first time in my life. I’m going to London in a week

and the future seems bright.

I’m a senior in college now. I have already completed my biology minor and

music major. I have one short year to go. I committed myself to take on a variety of

responsibilities in my three short years here, one of which was the Community Assistant

position. I’ve been offered a job running the STEM and Music program at a Boys and

Girls Club when I get back. I’m leaving my options open however so I did not commit.

There are going to be more opportunities after I return from Europe. I get to work for one

month as an intern in an industry of my choice.

I’ve explored the Adirondacks because of its convenience and accessibility and I

saw it as an opportunity to engage with the world in a different way. It taught me to trust

myself a little bit more. I found the virtue in silence and the Daks strengthened me

physically as well.

Every time I return to the city I’m grateful for the way things turned out with

school. I’m seeing doors open up that I did not see before. Being a Laurentian has

developed me into being a better learner and professional. I have considered continuing

my education as well.

Thank you Roslyn and Mitchell S., and the Stephanie Marie Burgos Scholarship

foundation for accepting me as a scholar and actively providing opportunity to inner city

youth like myself.

All the best,

Alex Martin

Ten years ago there was no S.M.B.S. Inc.

Ten years ago lived a sixteen year old girl who faced many adversities in her life.  Struggling in a foreign place at a younger age, the move from the richly diverse New York City to North Carolina was not easy.  Despite the support of a single mother at home and  her father from a distance, life was turbulent for her.   She had academic difficulties, which was a combination of special needs and emotional delays, often masked with things she loved; her writing, singing, playing the piano and simply enjoying music, which helped get her through the days..

Stephanie once dreamed to be a famous singer and even an American Idol winner.  She wanted to live up to the nickname her grandma gave her "ojitos de estrella", little star eyes.  Stephanie also dreamed of a world where color where culture and race did not matter.  She was a charismatic, friendly and an out going young lady, who proudly stood her ground despite being a minority.  She fought the generalization of her own cultural background in her school cafeteria on top of a table calling out loud that she was "Puerto Rican, not Mexican" as any child appearing to be of Latin American were categorized as "Mexican".

She wanted a world to be kinder to those who struggled with not only academics but emotional set backs that impeded on their educational endeavors.

On September 15th, 2005, Stephanie was suddenly gone from this world.  It was almost three years after losing her did her family decide to take on the task of looking for one student, like Stephanie, to help not only financially but emotionally support their efforts to reach their academic goals.  In the spring of the year Stephanie was supposed to graduate from high school, Stephanie's family selected the first S.M.B.S. Inc. scholarship recipient, a New York City high school senior entering college in the fall 2008.   Since then, the organization which was created in Stephanie's memory continues to help kids like her.  S.M.B.S. Inc. became officially incorporating in 2010 but the work was consistent from the beginning until the present.

This Tuesday will mark ten years Stephanie left this earth to young, at the tender age of sixteen.  Her loss was tragic and unexpected.  It made everyone who knew her stop and realize that life is to short. She had many dreams which she was not fulfilled.  Dreams she never got to achieve.  We are now privileged to help other youngsters like herself to achieve their own dreams.  Marking this anniversary the Stephanie Marie Burgos Scholarship, Inc. is proudly up to their eighth scholarship recipient and have alumni, who are carrying on the torch by serving as directors on the board bringing the organization into the future.

Stephanie we miss you but we know you will always be here in spirit, in our work.  You are an inspiration to our scholars, our board of directors and your family, who work hard to keep your shining star bright.

Lisual Diaz Update #1

Here is an update from our 7th Scholar, Lisaul!

My name is Lisaul Diaz and I am currently a sophomore at the University at Albany. Since my first year of college, I have changed my major from Biology to Business in search for a career that fits my aspirations.

I have joined the Mixed Martial Arts club at my university and have been training for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu outside of my academic schedule.

I also plan on joining the marching band at my university in order to learn more about instruments and how they work. Also, to add more inspiration to my own material in my own music.

This scholarship has helped me strive in the academic field because it helped me focus more on what I needed to do in my classes rather than having to worry about financial issues.

I am planning on graduating college by 2018 through the business school at University at Albany with a degree in Business Marketing.

Annual Meeting 2015

Board of Directors Meeting - Friday, September 11th 2015

"In remembrance of the innocent victims who lost their lives and in honor of the families they left behind, let us continue to answer these heinous acts by serving our communities, lifting the lives of our fellow citizens, and spreading the hope that others tried to dim that day".  ~President Obama

Inspired by these words from our president, on the 13th anniversary of September 11th, we proceeded in conducting our annual meeting in honor of those lost that day.

The meeting was a productive one with eight directors in attendance and four proxies.  Two former scholars, Christine Rivas (2008) and Richard Bohan (2009), where among those present. Thank you to them and the rest of the board members; Alexandria Agrinsoni, Diana Diaz Torres, Fanny Mera, Ashanti Rivera, Karen Texiera, and newest member, Kenny Lozano.  Your time and dedication to the organization is what keeps the scholarship alive and growing.  We want to thank former members who have officially resigned from the board this year; Roslyn Sternlieb (2008-2015) and James Carroll (2013-2015).  Both were also outstanding secretaries in their own time. We will hopefully still see them at events.

Upcoming fundraising events include Family Bowling Event 2015 on Saturday, November 21st and Annual Holiday Raffle to be drawn on December 18th.  You can get your tickets from any of our board members.

Peer Mentoring Program 2015

Dinner and Movies with Our Scholars, Our Stars
Tuesday, August 18th

Our four current scholars had the opportunity to meet each other mid-summer.  Richard Bohan, former scholar now board director and editor of our blog, facilitated and led the activity.
They discussed their academic goals over pizza and our newest scholars, Lisual and Shakira, had a chance to finally meet Marianna and Alex for the first time!
After dinner, our scholars headed out to the movies to see Pixels which they all enjoyed and were seen laughing throughout.
Thank you Lisa Mancini for your donation of movie complementary tickets, valued at $80. Our scholars had a fabulous time and were very grateful.
Until our next scholar reunion!

Scholar #8 - Congratulations to Shakira Delacruz

It is with great honor to announce our eighth scholar to the scholarship program.

Valedictorian of her graduating class, Shakira Delacruz from Bronx, New York, was presented with a certificate on her graduation day at Lehman College on Saturday, June 27th by our third scholar and current board member, Areta Gjicali.

Shakira's speech about perseverance in the face of adversity and advice to her peers to continue to achieve success was evidence enough that we selected the best candidate for our scholarship this year.  She is one strong and intelligent young lady who is committed to her academic success despite challenges in her own life.

Shakira graduated from the Gateway High School of Environmental and Research Technology and will be attending S.U.N.Y. New Paltz in Fall 2015.
